Church Street Plaza, Anderson, SC

“We Were Here”

2017 Dolomitic limestone

This grouping of sculptures is placed in the very spot that used to be home to shops and businesses run by African Americans who felt the segregation of the businesses in their town. They built businesses open to anyone, and once segregation was no longer an issue, the businesses closed – hence “We Were Here”. Most of the buildings were leveled and in their place a parking lot was create. Several citizens worked together to build Church Street Plaza, a little park that celebrates the history of Church Street. The two adult figures represent the past—key people who were integral to the success of the plaza, and the child represents the future—one who is listening to their stories.
